Abstract:  Amorphous lanthanum aluminoborate samples prepared by sol-gel technique have been characterized by thermal analysis and IR spectroscopy. Thermal analysis showed that continuous weight losses take place up to 800oC as a result of nitrates decomposition, glycerol pyrolysis and dehydroxylation. The crystallization of amorphous xerogels took place between 760oC and 860oC. From FTIR measurements it results that in amorphous lanthanum aluminoborate xerogels aluminum occurs as hexa-, penta- and tetracoordinated and boron occurs as three- and tetracoordinated by oxygens. The main aluminum species is pentacoordinated while boron appears mainly as threecoordinated.
