Abstract:  Infinitive and Subjunctive in French and Romanian: between the Constraints of the Linguistic System and Free Choice. It is known that in Romanian there exist a long and a short infinitive which correspond to the opposition nominal / verbal. On the other hand, what individualizes Romanian within the group of Romance languages is the competition between the infinitive and the subjunctive at the distributional level. By comparing a text in French with its equivalent in Romanian, we analyze Romanian versions of the French infinitive in order to bring into relief not so much the quantitative relation but the constraints of the system, the situations which allow the choice between both forms and those where selection is limited.

Key words: Romanian, French, infinitive, subordination, subjunctive.
