Article:   ON SUBORDINATION IN BEARNESE / DE LA SUBORDINATION EN BÉARNAIS.

Authors:  .

Abstract:  On Subordination in Bearnese. Starting from prolegomenon, the author analyses whether Bearnese is a member of the “Langue d’oc” group. He argues that the distinction made by Dante in the XIVth century between “oïl” and “oc” leads to a typological problem because it does not take into account the fact that, among the Romance languages of Southern France, the Gascon group (of which Bearnese is a member) coming from the Aquitaine proto-basque substratum has a number of distinctive traits which sets it apart. The Gascon group has a system of predication which is unknown to other Romance languages. This system, briefly described, provides the framework for subordination in Bearnese which the author analyses in detail in the light of the principles of Psychomechanics.

Keywords: Bearnese, Gascon, predication, Psychomechanics, subordination.
