Abstract:  The first part of this paper sums up the principles adopted to analyse the latin derivates built with suffixes. The second deals with the latin adjectives in -osus with a special attention paid to the quantitative data, then to the morphological features in a synchronic point of view and finally to the semantical contents of the bases, of the substantives predisposed to be qualified by the adjectives built in such a manner and to the suffix itself. We insist upon the evident lexical micro systems usually associated with the suffix -osus. In the third part, we apply the same way of examination to the french adjectives in -eux. The conclusion is that the french suffix -eux is really productive in technical languages and that this is its main specificity. The semantical contents of the latin suffix -osus generally disappeared during the evolution from latin to modern french.

Keywords: latin lexicology, french lexicology, word-formation, suffixes-osus and -eux.
