Abstract:  From the comparison between G. Tortelli’s and N. Perotti’s points of view on the prepositions/ prefixes in Latin, we conclude on validity and complementarity of their different Humanistic approaches. This difference results from a difference of projects formed by theses two scholars who had so many common points (they both studied in Mantova, both belonged to the Roman Humanism and supported Valla whose Elegantiae were dedicated to G. Tortelli). But while N. Perotti, with his Latin Grammar, wanted to write a useful grammatical description (and so necessarily schematic) intended for beginners in Latin, Tortelli at the contrary, in order to complete the work of Valla, proposed a comparative study of orthography and lexicography adressed to confirmed Latin scholars whose purpose was to become versed in the Latin words taken from greek required to an Encyclopaedic ambition.

Keywords: Latin Humanism, lexicography, Latin grammar, Quattrocento.
