  Article:   MEANINGFUL SILENCE IN THE CONTEXT OF MODERN PLAY.

  Abstract:  Le mot et le silence peuvent être totalement différents, pourtant ils ont développé une relation complémentaire, comme l’obscurité et la lumière ou la vie et la mort. L’un n’a pu jamais être défini en l’absence de l’autre. Les mots sont spécifiquement humains, alors que le silence est "le refuge universel, la suite à tous les discours mats et tous les actes idiots, un baume à notre chaque contrariété, [...] notre asile inviolable, où aucune indignité ne peut nous envahir, aucune personnalité ne peut nous déranger" (Henry David Thoreau). Puisqu’entre la "vie et le théâtre il n’y aura aucune division distincte, mais à la place une continuité" (Artaud, dans Bentley 1992: 69), nous avons choisi - comme meilleure terre d’analyse - quatre pièces de théâtre postmodernistes, écrits par Harold Pinter, The Room, The Birthday Party, The Dumb Waiter et A Slight Ache.
