  Abstract:  L’année de sa mort, Leo Spitzer s’interrogeait sur les raisons pour lesquelles la stylistique comme discipline avait mis si longtemps à s’imposer en France, alors qu’en Allemagne, en Italie, dans le monde hispanique et anglo-saxon, sa méthodologie avait rapidement trouvé sa place. Il avançait trois raisons: l’isolationnisme intellectuel de la Grande Nation, le positivisme de l’esprit français, enfin, et paradoxalement, le prestige de l’explication de texte: Dans cette technique, les détails de langue et de style abondent; et les critiques français peuvent dès lors se dire: que nous faut-il encore? Ainsi la présence d’une technique très développée à un certain niveau empêche l’essor d’une technique similaire à un niveau plus élevé.
