Abstract:  Knut Hamsunʼs anxiety of Henrik Ibsen – the novelist vs the dramatist. This article investigates the Norwegian novelist Knut Hamsunʼs relationship to his fellow countryman, the dramatist Henrik Ibsen. By criticising Ibsen, Hamsun tries to position himself in the literary field. In Harold Blooms terms, Hamsun misreads Ibsen in an anxiety of influence. Knut Hamsun is irritated by Henrik Ibsen as a person. He dislikes Ibsenʼs poetics. This article examines Hamsunʼs disregard for the genre of drama and argues that Hamsunʼs authorship in spite of this is nourished by Ibsen.

Keywords: Knut Hamsun, Henrik Ibsen, influence, novel, drama.
