  Abstract:  Is syntax determined by semantics? A statistical correlation between predicative predisposition and degree modification as a possible indication. In two corpora in English and in French of ±10,000 words, it was observed that the number of occurrences of adnominal (attributive) adjectives was roughly 4 times greater than the number of predicative adjectives, and that the frequency of intensifiers was much higher among the latter (25-30% vs 10%). In two tagged corpora of around 5m words each, Python regex formulae were used to inventory the occurrences of 250 common adjectives. Spearman''''s correlation test indicated a relatively strong correlation between predicative predisposition and the frequency of degree modifiers. A graphical representation of certain semantic families shows that they tend to share common syntactic predispositions.
