  Abstract:  Toujours and immer: Similarities and Differences. The uses of the adverb toujours are usually divided into temporal uses: Il est toujours chez lui; Il l’aime toujours…, and into non-temporal uses: Il devenait toujours plus maigre. Most of these uses have their equivalent with the word immer in German: Er wurde immer magerer, but a few have no equivalent: Toujours est-il qu’il est beau mec. Moreover, in certain uses toujours must be expressed by immer noch and not by immer (Er liebt sie immer noch). Immer, however, have more uses than toujours : Immer kann man kommen (On peut venir à tout moment); Warum auch immer (pour quelque raison que ce soit) ou Wann immer seine Zeit erlaubte,... (Chaque fois que le temps le lui permettait ...). This comparison which will enables us to determine the potential meaning of toujours and immer in tongue.
