Abstract:   Eight Reasons to Attend an Academic Writing Course. The Impact of Academic Writing Courses on Participants. Drawing on the available literature, the paper identifies the “uses” of academic writing courses for all types of potential participants answering the question: “Why should you attend an Academic Writing (AW) Course?” Eight major answers were identified. These are then structured in a table with four vertical columns that are organised along an AW-skills-development axis, ranging from “public” to “individual”, emphasising the “individual” aspect of the skill acquisition process. This, in turn, highlights the fact that the focus of any academic writing course should be on the specific needs of the individual participant. A possible application for the results as well as future research are also suggested.

Key words: academic writing, impact of courses, participants, development of academic writing skills.
