Abstract:  Corneille’s plays are highly indebted to the rhetoric taught in the Jesuits’ colleges, whereas the playwright’s poetics often differs from that of Aristotle’s. As for his outlook on the role of performance in social life, it was criticized by both Augustinians and Jansenists, as well as by some of the Jesuits. They were all hostile to the powerful influence exerted by the visual seduction of the theatrical performance on spectators.
