Abstract:  Norwegian History - Epochs and Tendencies. There can never exist one final and authoritative way of writing the history of a country. All history is a selection of what happened in the past, and no selection and interpretation is possible without an assessment of what should be considered important. In this article the main epochs of the history of Norway are presented with these general considerations in view. One of the perspectives is that Norway through the ages has been on the geographical periphery of Europe, but not so remote that cultural, economic and political contacts have been hampered.
