Could alors be a marker of discursive thematization? The article considers a particular case in the usage of “alors”, aiming to show that this lexeme has, in colloquial French, an original function. It cannot be transferred to any other type of formal marker – and a specific one –, while also activating the inherent anaphoric dimension of its semantics. Thus, “alors” has the particularity of linking the discursive sequence it precedes to a previous question. The anaphorization works, therefore, at the dialogical level (Q alors R), and not at the propositional level (q alors p). This confirms the problematological essence of the discourse while also emphasizing its (implicit or explicit) structural questions.
