Abstract:  The book 20 Years After the Collapse of Communism. Expectations, Achievements and Disillusions of 1989 edited by Nicolas Hayoz, Leszek Jeniseń and Daniela Koleva gathers studies from the 10th Eastern European Day held in autumn 2009 at the Interfaculty Institute for Central and Eastern Europe at the University of Fribourg. The various perspec¬tives – political, anthropological, historical, literary-critical, cultural and philological – are doubled by ‘insider perspectives’ and design a complex picture of the post-communist transition. The three paths of transition from totalitarianism to democracy – the accelerated transformation with Europe as an effective myth, a transformation albeit stalled and history delayed and an abandoned transformation – render ambiguities due to the increasing gap between the democratized or democratizing part of Europe and the increasingly authoritar¬ian one.
