Abstract:  Mihai Zamfir’s most recent book starts from the very beginning with a considerable polemic appeal. The word “alternative”, in the volume’s subtitle, states the author’s intention not only of not following the too-treaded paths of Romanian literary history, but also an implicit appetence for opening new interpretative directions. As he puts it himself, „There is something in each of the great 19th century writers that escaped the contemporary critics, as well as the critical tradition in general”. All of these new „forking paths” derive from the book’s central endeavour: circumscribing the writers’ value independ¬ently from the historical context or the bio¬graphical facts, but rather based on a very strict stylistic criterion, meant to discover the “linguistic cipher” which, once reached, allows the access to “the core of a literary work, its final individuality”.
