  Abstract:  Le titre contient déjà les éléments majeurs que Bernard Andrieu place au centre de son livre: l’individu du XXI-e siècle et son corps. La cohésion du rapport entre ces deux termes sera assurée par un troisième: le concept de liberté. L’auteur affirme dès «L’Avant-propos» avoir l’intention d’interroger toutes les limites imposées au corps moderne afin de pouvoir décider si la liberté corporelle est une invention du sujet ou une illusion produite en lui par la societé dans le but de le maintenir dans ses normes. L’intérêt que cette question suscite chez Bernard Andrieu est justifié par sa conviction que l’individu occidental est persuadé du fait que la liberté du corps a une importance capitale dans la définition de l’identité personnelle. La relation de l’individu à soi-même, à la société, à la nature, à la mort, tels sont les points de repère que l’anthropologue impose à sa démarche.
