Abstract:  An Analysis of the Modalities in the First Four Sequences of "Voyage at the End of the Night" by L.-F. Céline. Céline’s representation of the society, of man — as it appears in his Voyage — is an extremely negative one. The common point of themes such as war, colonialism, industrialisation, capitalism is suffering derived from moral degradation. The analysis of the modalities convoqued by Bardamu’s discourse (cf. the first four sequences dealing with the experience of the war) is supposed to confirm (or invalidate) our hypothesis of a negative axiologic dominant of Céline’s argumentation.
