Abstract:  The professor’s figure in Chagrin d’école by Daniel Pennac. The French writer Daniel Pennac is in the book Chagrin d’école an autobiographical writer and an essayist, using his childhood memories and his teaching experience to highlight the sometimes unexpected vision of the « bottom of the class » figure. He was himself a student in permanent situation of school failure, without any visible cause, and the book is an investigation of what can cause these failures. He was saved by meeting a few teachers who knew to discover in him unsuspected resources that helped him pass the baccalaureate and then to follow a college, to become a French teacher and last but not least, to discover his vocation as a writer. Our article examines the « bottom of the class » figure but it especially aims to portray Professor Daniel Pennacchioni, along with the teacher’s « ideal » image. The latter should be passionate about what he teaches, to know how to communicate with the class, to treat all students with respect, respect their individual characteristics and to adapt the learning to the student’s style. But what is most important is to help him overcome fear, inhibitions, laziness and to never abandon the student.

Keywords: school, teacher, « bottom of the class », education, teaching.
