  Abstract:  The authors of this thesis present early theatrical activities of one of the most important ballet companies in the history of world theatre, Serge Diaghilev’s Les Ballets Russes, focusing on the period between 1909 and 1912. During its existence, which dates from 1909 to 1929, the company represented a most important phenomenon in the history of ballet as well as modern scenic design. The spectacular productions of Diaghilev’s company transformed the presentation of dance on stage and poetic of stage. The aim of the thesis is to provide a description of significant features characteristics of the Art Nouveau stage production. The sets used in Diaghilev’s early productions presented on European stages, especially in Paris, are seen as the first attempts to introduce Art Nouveau into theatre. Therefore, the text can be viewed as an attempt to record the birth of Art Nouveau aesthetics in the European theatre as well as the influence it had on communication in theatre, especially the ways a theatrical event was presented to the public. These Art Nouveau innovations became the norm for subsequent artistic movements.
