Abstract:  All human activities, including foreign language teaching, depend to a great extend on the presence or lack of motivation. Motivation consists of stimulation to action. In linguistic literature, two types of motivation are discussed; outside motivation, which is not connected to a given activity but is based on the outside circumstances, and inside motivation, which is connected to the actual essence of the activity, (in this case, connected to the foreign language study). In foreign language teaching of adult learners, in this case of military specialists, both types of motivation have great importance for the achieving of the aims assigned. The teacher in foreign languages plays an important role for the preservation of motivation to learn. Therefore, nowadays, special attention is payed to this particularly important relationship between the teacher and the learner.

Keywords: foreign language teaching, motivation to learn, adult learners, military specialists
