Abstract:  Analytical and Synthetical Modalities in Expressing Possession. This study is dedicated to the analytical or synthetical modalities of expressing possession in Romanian. We can notice the fact that in Romanian the declension tends to simplify by unifying the inflections of the feminine nouns for Genitive – Dative: casii, fetii, maicii etc., and the Genitive – Dative article lui for masculine nouns is used for feminine nouns, too. The feminine proclitic article ii, i, îi, used in old language was substituted in contemporary language by lui. The analytical modality for expressing possession is more and more used, but it is not new because analytical constructions were also mentioned in the previous centuries. The analytical structures are in free variation with the synthetical ones, but the use of prepositions instead inflections tends to occupy ‘areas’ of the synthetic domain. Thus, the family relations, synthetically expressed, are subjected to the influence of the analytical constructions. The analytical modality is preferred at the less formal level of speech, but a progress of the analytical structures is vizible at the level of standard language, too.
