  Abstract:

This paper focuses on the problem of recognizing in real time the sign language used by the community of deaf people. The problem is addressed using digital image processing methods in combination with a surpervised learning approach to recognize the signs made by a deaf person. For the recognition step, an artificial neural network will be used. The main goal of the paper is to show that a good performance can be achieved without using any special hardware equipment, so that such a system can be implemented and easily used in real life. An experiment is provided and directions to further improve our work are also emphasized.

Key words and phrases. Sign Language Recognition, Artificial Neural Networks, Image Processing.
