Abstract:  The archive of the former Art History Seminary of the Cluj University treasures a rich documentary material including correspondence in the country and abroad, notes concerning international congresses in the field, administrative papers of the art history academic education dating back to the interwar age. The aforementioned material has a major significance not only for the history of art history, education and research in the field of art history at the University of Cluj, but also for the dynamics of the international cultural-scientific relations that professor Coriolan Petranu has established on behalf of the Cluj Seminary with similar institutions in Central and Western Europe or even across the Ocean. After Transylvania''s union with Romania, the Romanian state had embarked upon an accelerated process of modernizing various fields of human activity. Academic education was one of them. The committee charged with reorganizing the University of Cluj, presided over by general commissioner Sextil Puşcariu, decided to set up a substantial number of new chairs, seminaries and institutes, side by side with those already in function. The reasons for the new perspective on our academic education are also apparent in the words uttered by the historian Vasile Pârvan on the respective occasion: "The requirements of the age are that we come up with something to supersede not only our own institutions in the Older Kingdom, but also the present organization...". Before the Treaty of Trianon, there was no art history chair and seminary in the old Cluj University, although Transylvania was a geographical area with a valuable treasure of plastic art monuments.
