Abstract:  Research on the history of the Habsburg Monarchy starts as a linguistic challenge due to the territorial composition of this European empire. The situation has been complicated during the past century, as the emergence of multiple nation-states within what used to be Habsburg borders led to the development of rich historiographical traditions in languages such as French, Hungarian, German, Italian, Polish, Romanian, Serbian, Ukrainian, and so on. Specialists attempting to write encompassing histories of the Habsburg lands have to rely on secondary sources such as this collection of studies.
