Abstract:  The book edited by Howard Louthan, Gary Cohen and Franz Szabo is the result of two conferences held in Minnesota and Edmonton. It focuses on the Early Modern Era (1500-1800) and represents an “updated” approach as confessionalization, religious identity, diversity, and tolerance are among the most researched topics in the last few decades. It is an American/European approach whose target is to go beyond the national limits of historiography. The area is defined in the title as “Central Europe”, but regions such as Eastern Poland (Brest) and, to some extent, certain parts of the Habsburg Monarchy would be rather in East-Central Europe [Ostmitteleuropa]. Thus, “peripheral” regions such as Transylvania will not find their place into this book.
