  Article:   ISOTOPIC COMPOSITION OF PRECIPITATION SULPHATES AS AN INDICATOR OF POLLUTANT ORIGIN IN WROCłAW (SW POLAND) PRECIPITATIONS.

  Abstract:  This paper describes results of isotopic analyses of (i) hydrogen and oxygen in water (δDH2O and δ18OH2O) and (ii) sulphur and oxygen of sulphates (δ34Ssulphate and δ18Osulphate) from precipitation collected during a one-year period (May 25th, 2004 to May 25th, 2005) in Wrocław (SW Poland). The city of Wrocław has ca. 640,000 inhabitants and is situated on the Odra River on the foreground of the Sudety Mountains. The average annual precipitation reaches 583 mm, and predominant wind directions in Wrocław are south and west. Monitoring the concentration of sulphates in precipitations has been carried out by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMWM department of Wrocław) for several years. The IMWM data present only information about the quantity of sulphates in precipitation and do not inform about the origin of pollutants. Our sulphate concentration measurements, ranging from 1.84 to 19.66 mg/l (average 9.17 mg/l), combined with isotopic analyses, allowed us to answer two questions: (i) what is the equation of LLWM (Local Meteoric Water Line) in Wrocław; and (ii) what are the main sources of sulphates in the Wrocław precipitation.
