Abstract:  The origin and sedimentary environment of a Late Quaternary supra-alluvial sequence (Third Terrace, Floreşti, Someşul Mic). Even though the existence of a non-alluvial stratigraphic sequence in most climatic river terraces in Transylvania has been stresses by a number of authors (Posea 1961, Jakab and Sipos 1967, Jakab 1974, 1977, Mac 1994) the origin and the set of geomorphological processes responsible for its genesis remained largely assigned to the general notion of periglacial environment. The paper presents sedimentological data on the loess-like deposits and associated paleosols of the Floreşti site (near Cluj-Napoca city), which gives an insight on the nature and origin of these morphostratigraphic units. Using a Fritsch Laser Particle Sizer, Analysette 22, a detailed grain size analysis has been conducted with special attention on the silt fraction (10-63 μm). The coarse fraction > 63 μm and the U ratio are also discussed. The general conclusion of the study is that a complex proluvial environment has been active on the slopes in the Late Glacial cold periods alternating with periods of pedogenesis specific to the associated interstadials.
