Abstract:  Processing Digital Elevation Models using Avenue. The role of Digital Elevation Models (DEM) has increased considerably since their introduction in the fifties, these being used both for engineering purposes and for the calculation of several topographic attributes, the latter being key variables in present physically based distributed models. Even though several methods exist for producing DEMs the most widely used ones are the methods based on manual digitizing, due to low cost and data availability. DEMs obtained through interpolating digitized data often need preprocessing for the removal of interpolation artifacts and for the enforcement of landscape characteristics. This paper presents two scripts developed in Avenue, ArcView GIS`s programming language, scripts that can be used to remove interpolation artifacts (i.e. sinks) and to enforce drainage networks. The result of applying these scripts is the obtaining of a hydrologycally sound DEM that can be used for modeling purposes. The presented scripts were tested on a gridded digital elevation model obtained through interpolation.
