Abstract:  Some Applications of the Variational Calculus in the Determination of River Profile Balance. It is first introduced the term Overall Balance that is based on precise mathematical equations, taken from variational calculus, and on a principle of analytical mechanics, that is, the principle of minimum action. From the issue of brahistocrone it is inferred the downstream profile of the flow (river flow), and from balance shape of a heavy thread, fixed at both ends, flexible and inextensible, of a given length, and prone to gravity influence, it is deduced the optimal vertical profile of the valley, under ideal conditions.
