Abstract:  Functional Regionalisation of Nord-Vest Region of Romania. Six counties make up the North Vest Region: Satu Mare, Maramureş, Bihor, Sălaj, Bistriţa Năsăud and Cluj. The obvious differences in development make possible the delimitation of four types of areas: booming, critical, disfavoured and protected. Booming areas are characterised by dynamic economic sectors, with strong polarization of material and financial influxes. Critical areas suffer from sectorial imbalances (leading to declining industries, unemployment and environmental difficulties), while disfavoured areas have a low socio-economic standard, and infrastructure problems. The 123 protected areas, preserving certain landscape traits, were established as buffer areas within zones of intensive agriculture and forestry.
