  Abstract:  Patrick J. Geary est un historien américain et professeur d’histoire à l’université de Californie, spécialiste du Haut Moyen Age européen. Dans son ouvrage Quand les nations refont l’histoire – L’invention des origines médiévales de l’Europe, titré à l’origine The Myth of nations ‐ The medieval origins of Europe, il cherche à rendre compte de ce que furent les peuples européens au cours du Ier millénaire, en rompant avec la vision des idéologues nationalistes d’une histoire des peuples européens linéaire et continue, sans pour autant nier l’importance des nations et des peuples dans le processus complexe de l’histoire européenne.
