  Abstract:  Era o după-amiază calmă a anului 1882. În biroul lui John B. Bogart, o cană mare de cafea aburindă aştepta să fie băută. Într-un colţ, aţipit pe labele din faţă, buldogul Marc aştepta un os sau măcar o plimbare. Cu trabucul stins, dar încă lipit de colţul din dreapta al buzelor, cu ochii închişi sub borurile pălăriei aplecate pe frunte, domnul Bogart aştepta să-i fie adusă pentru viză pagina cu ştiri de actualitate. Se închidea ediţia la New York Sun, iar John Bogart, unul dintre cei mai experimentaţi editori ai ziarului, era cel care dădea, în cele din urmă, bunul de tipar.
