  Abstract:  Cet article analyse le discours cinématographique de Peter Greenaway en relation avec la source littéraire, dans le cas de son film Prospero’s Books, et avec une installation plus récente, avec l’intention de filtrer les raisons cachées derrière son style polyphonique. Habituellement, les critiques observent chez Peter Greenaway la théâtralité de l’image filmique, instaurée surtout par le traitment pictural du nu masculin / féminin ; en effet, le cinéaste n’est pas un partisan de l’absolutisme de l’image, mais un artiste intéressé par la complexité du signe, qu’il exploite de manière soutenue, en vue de répondre à la métamorphose du public.
