  Abstract:

This paper discusses the work of Tadeusz Kantor, one of the most important representatives of European Culture, focusing on two of the performances (The Dead Class and Wielopole, Wielopole) included in the cicle entitled Theatre of Death. The aim of this paper is to analyse the relationship between the artist and his creation, given the fact that his presence on stage, as an integrating part of the performance, has been the subject of controversy and can constitute a key to understanding his work The essay is interested more in the symbolic implications of Kantor’s presence on stage, rather than discussing the functional aspects concerning the director’s presence among his actors/characters in the centre of his creation.

Keywords: theatre, Tadeusz Kantor, simbolism
