Article:   ENGINEERED GREEN FLUORESCENT PROTEIN AS A POTENTIAL METAL SENSOR.

  Abstract:

The designed biosensor is based on a mutant form of green fluorescent protein (GFP). It is known that metal ions in close proximity to a cromophore group reduce the protein’ s fluorescence intensity by fluorescence quenching. Using site directed mutagenesis, we formed a metal binding site near the protein’s chromophore group. Thus, the mutant protein presents a new functional property, which allows its utilization in detection of metal ions.
