Abstract:   The Carpathian Mountains are rich in biodiversity and host Europe''s largest continuous temperate forest ecosystems (UNEP, 2007). We used a fossil record (Tăul Muced) from a montane coniferous forest of the Eastern Carpathians to explore patterns of change in vegetation composition, turnover and diversity in response to various forcing factors (e.g., climate, wildfire, species interactions, natural and anthopogenic disturbances) during the Holocene, and to investigate the plant communities associated with periods of high landscape stability.
