Abstract:  The Study of Xanthophyll Cycle Pigments in Scenedesmus opoliensis P. Richter Green Alga under Conditions of Photoinhibition Induced by Higher Light Intensities. The paper presents the photoinhibition induction and the role of the xanthophyll cycle pigments in Scenedesmus opoliensis alga suspensions. The effects of 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 and 3000 μmol.m-2.s-1 light intensitis, for a period of exposure of 30, 60, 90 and 120 min were recorded. The levels of chlorophyll a and b and that of carotenoids were modified in the first 30 min of light exposure, proportionally to the intensity of light. Photoinhibition modifies the composition of photosystems, The redox state recorded by absorption at 320 nm and 700 nm points out that photoinhibition changes the photosystems activities. The activity of photosystems has a positive correlation with the accumulation of proteins. The deepoxidation reactions of violaxanthin were directly influenced by the intensity of light. During the reconversion stage, the epoxidation of zeaxanthin is slower and depends on the photodamage produced by high light. Indexes DEPS and EPS have pointed out the existence of the xanthophyll cycle with this species, as well as the protective role of the xanthophylls.
