Abstract:  The purpose of the study is to assess the ossification mechanisms that occur during callus distraction using a lab rat model mandible. Radiological, clinical and histological assessments of ossification were made at different stages of neoosteogenesis. Two different and simultaneous types of bone formation occur suggesting the coexistence of endoconjunctive and endocondral osteogenesis in the distracted callus.

Keywords: bone distraction, osteogenesis, endochondral osteogenesis, endoconjunctive osteogenesis.
