Articol:   VETÉLKEDŐ GYÖKEREK – KERESZTÉNY IDENTITÁS / COMPETITIVE ROOTS AND CHRISTIAN IDENTITY.

Rezumat:  The study makes a discourse analysis of the Roman Catholic newspaper “Új ember” (series 2000–2008) with Google search and the software MAXQDA2007. It focuses on the problem of Hungarian national and Christian identity, and it analyses the reference to King Stephen I. and King László I. as historical role models of this identity. It demonstrates that referring to these kings was always just an instrument for the writers to emphasize their opinions, and sometimes the same person is a reference point for two, totally contradictory points of view. In the last chapters the article tries to answer the question: is there a way to reconcile Hungarian national identity with the Christian one, because the lack of their synthesis created a void that made the writing of this study essential.

Keywords: nationalism, christianity, discourse analysis, King Stephen I., King László, synthesis.
