Rezumat:   Paul Tillich coming from a different social, cultural and theological milieu (USA) gives an essentially different definition of the theological issues from the ones we find in contemporary Europe. Among these, one of his basic themes was that of the alienation-sin-downfall, that represents the backbone of his systematic theological thinking.
Tillich analyses the symbol of downfall in correspondence with sin from a peculiar point of view. He provides his own definition of the essential and existential living. In the alienation concept Tillich discovers that category with which the modern man can picture his broken relation with God, fellows and himself.
Our subject is seeking the Tillichian and likely American answer to such questions as sin, alienation, demythologization, the relation between theology and philosophy, for which the Tillichian approach represents a challenge and demands clarification.

Keywords: alienation, essential and existential living, sin, downfall, demythologization.
