Rezumat:  18th Century Textiles in the Reformed Congregation of Sáromberke (Transylvania). The study presents some valuable textiles found in the Reformed Congregation of Sáromberke. Most of them were donated by Baroness Kata Wesselényi in the second part of the 18th century. The presence of these objects is explained by the close relationship of the baroness and the wife of Count Teleki Sámuel, Zsuzsanna Bethlen, who lived in the cast le of Sáromberke. First, we present some very valuable textiles from the beginning of the 18th century to see how the ornaments and the techniques have changed. One of these pieces, a tablecloth donated by Gönczi Ist vánné P[…] Kata was presented at the World Exhibition in Paris of 1900. Baroness Kata Wesselényi has donated 11 textiles in the years 1755 (3 pieces), 1772 (4 pieces) and 1776 (4 pieces), which is proved by the inscriptions on them. Some of them took part in the liturgy, so their materials and techniques are more delicate (6 pieces) than others’, which were donated for everyday use (5 pieces) to lay over the table at the church. By the skillful embroidered textiles metallic and slim silk threads were used, sometimes completed even with drawn worked parts too. To cover the table at the church the materials were rougher and for the embroidery threads were used, which weren’t twist ed. The chosen ornaments are typical for the period in which these textiles were made. Most frequently the asymmetrical fl oral ornaments (6 pieces) are used. Others show st ill the renaissance infl uence by their undulatoric (waved) and symmetric construct ion (3 pieces). The other typical elements in the baroque period are those fl oral ornaments, which have at their basis a spiral (2 pieces). Related to the ornaments we have to mention that without exception these textiles have fl oral elements – like the pomegranate, the rose, the tulip etc. – but in five cases we meet fi gural elements too. One is the mermaid (on 5 pieces), which is present on the coat of arms of the Wesselényi family and the other is the swan (on 2 pieces), which is the element of the blazon of the Rhédei family. Finally we can say that these 18th century textiles are representative pieces of the era, in which they were made and donated to the Reformed Congregation of Sáromberke. Their worth constrains that they were donated to the Lord, the fine techniques, ornaments and materials, and their age.
