Rezumat:  Mead`s communication theory; language as gesture. Mead was a proponent of linguistic-behaviorist theories based entirely on the social process. To explain Mead`s conceptualizations, we have used a set of symbols. Thus, the social group made up of a number of individuals engaged in a communication process is noted [1, [2, [3...etc. The acts within the social group are represented by a and the types of answers to these acts by r. We have then presented, according to this symbolism, the process of communication between two or more individuals within a social group. The most important social activity leading to the genesis of human identity- the self- is language, since, through its use, an individual can answer his or her own vocal gestures the same way the others would. Mead uses child play and role-playing to explain his theories. These activities are causal factors for the emergence of the self (just like linguistic behavior). There are, therefore, two stages in the development of the self- the play and the game. From a social point of view, the self who takes up the other''''s attitudes through the linguistic process becomes The Generalized Other, and the values of the others become his or her values and, thus, values of the social process. The self, which reflects the social structure, cannot exist beyond this reflection. The Complete Self is made up of I and Me. I is a personal self, which changes the social structure through its actions, and which tends to become a Me, a social self, regulating its own behavior according to the attitudes of the others. The language of a group, its communication system, represents a Generalized Other- the answers and attitudes of the group determine communication through significant symbols. This system is the one by which the individual relates to him or herself as well as to others.
