Rezumat:  Contributions to the Biography of a Hierarch from Oradea. Bishop Ph.D. Iuliu Hirţea (1914 – 1978.) The period 1948-1989 represented for the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church a passage between two stages of its existence. The first one, when the events occurring around the spiritual and national ideal were built by this institution, this aiming at the rising and progress of the Romanian of both confessions, and, the second one, that continues also today, representing in fact the fruit of this passage. The present study is a contribution to the history of the Greek-Catholic Eparchy of Oradea aiming to talk about this passage built by its servants that lived their faith according to the answer given to the communist authorities by the cardinal Iuliu Hossu: Faith is our life. One of these servants was Bishop Dr. Iuliu Hirţea. The used sources, pretty disparate and most of the times incorrect, were completed with data from the Archives of the State or with interviews taken from those who closely knew him. Graduate of the „De Propaganda Fide” Institute, specialization biblical theology, subject that he also approached in his doctoral dissertation, after coming back to his country, he quickly become well known among the intellectuals from the Eparchy. Arrested even before the ban of the Greek-Catholic Church, Iuliu Hirţea will never sign for becoming an orthodox, but he unfalteringly continued his sacerdotal activity to the benefit of his believers. At the express desire of the Bishop Valeriu Traian Frenţiu, on 28th of July 1949, he is established auxiliary Bishop of Oradea by the Apostolic Nuncio Gerard Patrick O’Hara. As a result of his clandestine pastoral activity, he was arrested in 1952, convicted and then closed in the prisons from Oradea, Târgu Ocna, Jilava, Piteşti, Dej and Gherla. He was released in 1964. Although his health was seriously affected, he recommenced his sacerdotal activity immediately after liberation. So, the years 1964 – 1978 represent the third pastoration period after the one during the time spent in prison. In spite of all the persecutions and inquiries that never stopped, he succeeded in bringing and further conveying the message of the believers` faith from his Eparchy. The activity during this period presents four main directions: the first one, the pastoral ministration to the benefit of the priests and believers, the second one, the petitioner one, through which, together with other Greek-Catholic hierarchs from the country, they addressed to the governance of the communist state more memoirs and letters for the rehabilitation of the Romanian Church United with Rome; the third one, regarded the relations with the prelates from abroad, with the Catholic Church from the Occident; the fourth one, dedicated to his old passion, the study and the exegesis of the biblical texts, plus poems writing. The deeds of his life have also today an echo in the words of his testament: „I am leaving as a testament to the faithless pack of wolves, Forgiveness, and to you, my beloved, my blessing and follow my advice. Never forget, to be good Christians, to love your country and people as you love yourselves, to educate your children with affection and love, not to forget that you are a part of the Greek-Catholic Church founded by Peter on the ground of Rome […]”.
