Rezumat:   This paper discusses the diplomatic tensions between Romania, the Holy See and Hungary that have followed the expulsion of Gyula Glattfelder, Bishop of Temesvár (Timişoara) and the steps taken by Hungarian diplomats to rescue Glattfelder. Bishop Glattfelder was the most vehement critic of the 1921 Romanian land reform which led to the expropriation of the landed properties of the Catholic Church in Transylvania. His removal from Romania was a blow to the Catholic Church in Transylvania and had a significant impact on the diplomatic relationship between Romania and the Holy See. Based on so-far unexamined records from the National Archive of Hungary I discuss the diplomatic steps taken by Hungarian officials in the attempt to rescue Bishop Glattfelder and the reasons for which these steps have ultimately failed.
