  Rezumat:  The International Bible Commentary is the result of an ambitious projectmeant to elaborate a Catholic and ecumenical commentary for the 21st century. Thecommentary was initially (1990) designed by Bernard Orchard OSB to be a reeditionof A Catholic Commentary on Holy Scriptures (London, 1953) in the spiritof Vatican II biblical interpretation. In less than a decade, however, the projectgrew far beyond the boundaries of both English-speaking and Catholic scholarship.The project was hosted by the University of Dallas, with a particular responsibilityassumed by William Farmer.The publishers and the authors represent diverse fields of interest, proposequite different manners of approaching the biblical text and also differ as to theirreligious affiliation (Catholic, Protestant and one Orthodox) and their nationalbelonging. In a way this one-volume commentary reflects an exemplary manner ofcollaboration between US, Canadian, Latin American, European, African andAsian biblical scholars. This latter contributions is especially significant in the herereviewed Indian version, fact that leads to a further broadening of perspective,compared to the first, American edition. Notwithstanding this manifold approachextending from historical criticism to liberation theology, some principles havecontributed to the coherence of this commentary. This consistency stems from anotherwise less common, actual interaction between the authors, due to theNijmegen-conference initiated by Erik Eynikel, also responsible, along with Joseph Pathrapankal, for the Indian edition of the commentary. ...
