Education is regarded as an important vehicle of social mobility and status attainment, yet it has different effects on individuals` occupational trajectories. The historical variation of these effects follows the social, economic and political changes taking place in the society. Using the empirical data provided by the STRATSOC 2010 research , we analyze, in a longitudinal perspective, the changes in the correspondence between the respondents` education and their occupations in Romania, for five generations born between 1920-1985. Our study focuses on the variation in time of two variables: respondent`s occupation and education. The first part of the paper consists of a descriptive analysis of the evolution in time of the maximum level of educational attainment and of the first occupational status held by individuals. In the second part, we perform a multivariate analysis in order to examine, in a historical, generational perspective, the changes in the correspondence between education and occupational status in Romania.
