  Rezumat:  Linguistic expressions whose reference varies from utterance to utterance are called indexicals. Indexical expressions which may be used non-indexically, either anaphorically, or as bound variables are called true demonstratives, and expressions that have indexical uses are called pure indexicals. When the principle of compositionality is applied in an attempt to establish the meaning of a complex expression containing pure indexicals some problems are likely to arise due to the fact that an indexical`s referent is partly determined by extra-linguistic context. This paper presents a way of understanding the meaning of indexicals, such as `today` and `yesterday`, taking into account the relationship between the sense and the reference of such expressions.
