  Rezumat:  In the last decades the globalisation and the growing competition affected significantly the development of different countries, regions and cities. Because of the importance of competitiveness the neoliberal principles transformed urban policy almost in every country. The postsocialist cities experienced new conflicts related to this process: the predominance of economic aspects raised some serious dilemmas about public space, public services or housing. The paper introduces these dilemmas and conflicts through case studies from Hungary. These cases reveal what kinds of processes emerged in Hungarian cities regarding the use of space and public service. We also analyse the changing role of local governments: how they adapted to changing economic and social environment.
