Rezumat:  Theoretical Aspects of Democratic Consolidation. The main objective of my research work is to expand knowledge and expertise in comparative and empirical approaches of democratization and democratic consolidation. These issues are “hot” both theoretically and pragmatically for countries like Romania, which facing obstacles in creating a good quality and lasting democracy. There are two lines that I will follow. One is to evaluate the theories of Democratic “Consolidation” and apply to the new democracies different “tests” and criteria, and ideal type definitions of “consolidated democracy” like Robert Dahl’s polyarchy, the five arenas of Juan Linz and Alfred Stepan and the “tests” that Gunther, Diamandouros and Puhl propose. The focus is to try answers to the questions like: What makes democracies endure? What kind of institutional design and social conditions make possible democracy in poor countries? The second line is to use this theoretical frame for underline policies and strategies, which can consolidate democracy in Romania. My basic hypothesis is that the tasks, conditions, choices, politics of democratic consolidation are different from those of transitions.
